One of the greatest novels of Brazilian Literature, Iracema metaphorically recounts the origins of Brazil. The story revolves around the colonist Martim and his love for the Indian maiden Iracema. From their union is born a son, the new man of the New World. But while the son survives, the union costs the life of his mother, or in other words, the life of the indigenous peoples of Brazil.
