First published in 1979, The White Album records indelibly the upheavals and aftermaths of the 1960s. Examining key events, figures, and trends of the era--including Charles Manson, the Black Panthers, and the shopping mall--through the lens of her own spiritual confusion, Joan Didion helped to define mass culture as we now understand it. Written with a commanding sureness of tone and linguistic precision, The White Album is a central text of American reportage and a classic of American autobiography.
Joan Didion is an extraordinary feminism writer. She tellingly captures the spiritual landscape of the Americans in the 1960s. Compared to her counterpart who felt displaced and downtrodden, Didion was always so calm and objective that she just recoded what...

When we talk about entitlement we are not talking about privilege per se. Instead we are talking about a heightened consciousness, self awareness, unabashedly declared, unconsciously declaimed. Didion’s titular essay reeks of not only entitlement but also anti-substance. The rest of the essays could be ghastly bad too.

评分Didion mostly seem to be a vulnerable and extremely observant outsider of the system, though occasionally I find her to be quite privileged and condescending... The 1960s California, esp. the Bay Area in her essays is all so romantic yet relatable even today.

评分写得很有力量的女作家,不悲观不卖弄,只有幽默而诚实的书写。
