There is a way; there are indications along the way. Along the way you will find guides. I happen to be one. I know the route, I know the way, I know the problems. Trust me or not: I would rather make a voyage with one person who trusts me than with 500 people who are questioning, doubtful, and wondering.

In Afghanistan we are a very simple people: we get down to tangible basics, we are not abstract or theoretical. One of my ancestors, Jan-Fishan, said something which our family has always followed, because it’s very simple and basic. It has a value, not only on the superficial and obvious plane, but also a very deep significance. Because he was going to take on the whole of the Sassanian Empire, he said, in answer to a question “Give me one man to watch my back, and I will take on the world”.

It may be typically Afghan, it may be sentimental, but I have that man: I have my son.

Now I hope I don’t have to take on the world in battle, but I do certainly have to take on the world in the sense of getting the message of the Tradition across, which is equally and sometimes more difficult.
