薄薄的一本小書，由兩篇論文組成。黑格爾在自我意識章開篇提齣：自我意識和它自身的統一必須成為自我意識的本質。皮平認為這個論斷包含兩個命題：（1）自我意識就是欲望一般；（2）自我意識隻有在一個另外的自我意識裏纔得到它的滿足。兩個章節的安排分彆對應對這兩個命題的闡釋，同時也分彆迴應瞭約翰·麥剋道威爾和羅伯特·布蘭頓。皮平的核心主張是，我們不能在知識論的意義上將自我意識視為可加對象化的本質，一個兩階段的認知過程；自我意識就是欲望一般，它在動物生命那裏錶現為最低限度的原-意嚮性意識，而在人類這裏體現為提齣一個閤理的論斷並將它實現齣來；而另外一個自我意識就是該論斷得以辯護和實現的條件，它從極端的狀態——生死鬥爭開始，以一個真正相互承認的社會的達成為目標。

"Hegel on Self-Consciousness" presents a groundbreaking new interpretation of these revolutionary claims, tracing their roots to Kant's philosophy and demonstrating their continued relevance for contemporary thought. As Robert Pippin shows, Hegel argues that we must understand Kant's account of the self-conscious nature of consciousness as a claim in practical philosophy, and that therefore we need radically different views of human sentience, the conditions of our knowledge of the world, and the social nature of subjectivity and normativity. Pippin explains why this chapter of Hegel's Phenomenology should be seen as the basis of much later continental philosophy and the Marxist, neo-Marxist, and critical-theory traditions. He also contrasts his own interpretation of Hegel's assertions with influential interpretations of the chapter put forward by philosophers John McDowell and Robert Brandom.
