Mark R. Thompson is Professor of Political Science at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, Germany. He is also the author of The Anti-Marcos Struggle.
This book examines the neglected concept of democratic revolutions, spontaneous popular uprisings which topple unyielding dictators and begin a transition process that eventually results in the consolidation of democracy. Thompson demonstrates under what conditions democratic revolutions become possible, what is necessary for their success and how they can overcome cultural difference. It includes examples from China, Czechoslovakia, East Germany, the Philippines, Iran, Malaysia and Serbia.
