What can we learn about the Chinese revolution by placing a doubly marginalized group--rural women--at the center of the inquiry? In this book, Gail Hershatter explores changes in the lives of seventy-two elderly women in rural Shaanxi province during the revolutionary decades of the 1950s and 1960s. Interweaving these women's life histories with insightful analysis, Hershatter shows how Party-state policy became local and personal, and how it affected women's agricultural work, domestic routines, activism, marriage, childbirth, and parenting--even their notions of virtue and respectability. The women narrate their pasts from the vantage point of the present and highlight their enduring virtues, important achievements, and most deeply harbored grievances. In showing what memories can tell us about gender as an axis of power, difference, and collectivity in 1950s rural China and the present, Hershatter powerfully examines the nature of socialism and how gender figured in its creation.
作者简介
贺萧（Gail Hershatter），曾求学于美国汉普郡学院、中国南开大学、美国斯坦福大学，获斯坦福大学博士学位，曾任美国亚洲研究学会主席，现为加州大学圣克鲁斯分校历史系自身讲座教授。著有《天津工人，1900-1949》，《个人的声音：20世纪80年代的中国妇女》，《危险的愉悦：20世纪上海的娼妓问题和现代性》，《中国妇女在漫长的20世纪》，《记忆的性别：农村妇女和中国集体化历史》等。

评分外婆奶奶那一代陕西农村女性的口述史，配以西方视角的解读。在战火年代的童年、在解放前后的婚姻、家庭和生育，在集体时代顶半边天式的劳动、政治参与和领导。幸运的女孩在娘家长大、适婚年龄遇上婚姻法发布勇敢退亲、自己选择了丈夫、生孩子遇上新时代培养的接生员没遭多大罪孩子幸运存活、集体时代扫了盲能干能挣工分、甚至参与领导工作、男人不惹祸、婆婆不刁蛮。不幸的女孩，父兄被拉壮丁，从小跟着母亲流离失所，不到十岁被送到婆家做童养媳，或跟穷人家换亲，十几岁结婚，生孩子自己一人搞定——请不起产婆、婆婆觉得你矫情、丈夫不能进产房怕粘了晦气——或太遭罪从此不育，或遇产褥热六个孩子只养活两个，丈夫出门打工一分钱不着家或寄回家给公公截留了，自己挣工分、养孩子、伺候公婆，敢（极少极少）提离婚很可能被打死或自己投井。#生为女孩
评分女神贺萧！仅仅是关注到这一群体用十年收集整理口述史料就已经是巨大成就，但在研究中发现的memory has its gender不仅对于性别研究意义重大，而且对于整个历史学界都有深有启发。Always admire scholars who determined to do oral history!不愧是得过两次Joan Kelly还得过Levenson的人！

评分和自己的research topic並沒有特別直接的關係，但其中關於個人記憶、國家影響（state effect）以及國之意識（awareness of state）的論述還是有一些啟發。introduction裡面Hershatter一口氣提了關於中國婦女的十幾個問題，在隨後的九章內容中靈活地運用口述史料將其一一解答。訪談的深度、廣度與時間跨度令人讚嘆。幾個印象深刻的observation：中央的政策必然會被地方的獨特性compromise；婦女解放這一議題常常淹沒在國家更為看重的project（如合作化、肅反、大躍進等等）下；婦女大範圍參加與負擔耕作早在大躍進時期已經開始，是毛時代中國農業的重要組成部分。
