斯特林堡很清楚自己要做的是什麼，自序寫得非常好。但劇本不知為何感覺進不去，可能是他太沉迷於人物的設定瞭，颱詞不夠自然；也可能是獨幕劇太緊湊，情節起伏太快。也許頭腦“清醒”的人會過度關注自己看見的問題，反而是“迷迷糊糊”、“神叨叨”的寫作顯得更加生動

序比正文重要。看門人的狗和女主人的狗，對應女主與男僕的階級關係；權勢暫時顛倒，最終迴歸原有秩序；封閉空間內的角力，不那麼自然主義（廣義上仍是自然主義的，譬如強調遺傳的因素），反而預告瞭像McDonagh一類的劇作風格。談到私奔的時候，一些「現代性」的苗頭若隱若現，如火車旅行、Julie暗示要做酒店的櫥窗女郎、歐陸地理名稱的羅列等等。
