看的地中海三部麯的第二本，Roger Crowley的獨到之處在於用寫小說的手法寫曆史，因而把曆史的探索之旅變得更為生動有趣，特彆是本書精彩還原瞭威尼斯共和國的崛起到衰落的過程。第四次十字軍東徵和攫取君士坦丁堡使得威尼斯開始成為海上霸主，與熱內亞的四次交戰則確立瞭其牢固的海洋霸主地位，然而隨著土耳其奧斯曼帝國的崛起，海洋霸權最終輸給瞭陸地霸權。

五百年興衰其興也勃焉其亡也忽焉最後一章的總結很準確商業立國注定瞭不得久遠可是誰又能說衡量存在的標準就一定得是遺跡與殘垣？威尼斯開創的商業模式經荷蘭與英國一路傳承並發揚光大又何嘗不是某種意義上更曆久彌新的存在？
