So far Edmund White's best essay collection. Particularly impressive is his long article entitled "Nabokov: Beyond Parody," in which he regards Nabokov as "the best of the century" and "the high priest of sensuality and desire." Another writer he admires is Christopher Isherwood, whose fiction "Down There on a Visit" I find especially attractive.
