古典冒险故事，情节紧凑，草蛇灰线，人物鲜明，虽较熟悉作者善用伪装手法而丧失了一定悬疑性，但仍为男女主角的高尚品质所感动。整体基调为浓厚的保守主义与特权思想，对法国大革命持批判态度，褒贵族贬平民，削弱了思想性。
