這個集子堪稱“後卡佛時代”，《大教堂》也就是中年哀樂，有一種渾厚的意思，甚至不乏希望的可能，《大象》簡直是急景凋年，有一種綿密的絕望，非常地厚實，避無可避。《大象》這一篇，點題的意象句子齣現的時候，心頭莫名地浮現起“安忍不動，猶如大地”這句話，不可避免後半句“靜慮深密，猶如秘藏”也蹦瞭齣來。卡佛的四個集子，《請安靜》看“世相”，《談論愛》賞“藝術”，《大教堂》悟“智慧”，而《大象》，是感受“慈悲”。

More than a whiff of silent tension in the air. Insomniacs. Drunken, broken lives. Constant coffee and cigarettes. Inexplicable longings and uneasiness out of the blue. P.S. "My former wife" appears in just about every single story...the autobiographical vein certainly shows through enough. Especially recommended: "Boxes," "Elephant," and "Errand."
