Clay and the few desperate survivors who join him suddenly find themselves in the pitch-black night of civilization's darkest age, surrounded by chaos, carnage, and a human horde that has been reduced to its basest nature...and then begins to evolve.
There's really no escaping this nightmare. But for Clay, an arrow points home to Maine, and as he and his fellow refugees make their harrowing journey north they begin to see crude signs confirming their direction: KASHWAK=NO-FO. A promise, perhaps. Or a threat...

若當作科幻或恐怖小說來讀，這部十年前的小說無論是設定還是情節都顯得太過時瞭，當哈佛帽衫男齣現時我幾乎就要棄瞭。但隱約間這似乎又不僅於此，因為SK不厭其煩的細節描寫與反英雄推理，都讓我想到一百年前Wells的The War of Wars，甚至連病素變異的情節都很像。所以說這部小說可以在不同的層麵上解讀。作為科幻小說真的很平庸，作為警世格言卻又很雋永。
