阿瑟·高顿（Arthur Golden），生于美国田纳西州查塔努加（Chattanooga），本科毕业于哈佛大学艺术史系，专攻日本艺术。1980年，获哥伦比亚大学日本史硕士学位，兼修中文。在北京大学进修一个夏季之后，他到东京工作。回到美国后他在波士顿大学获英文硕士学位。目前他与妻子和两个孩子定居马萨诸塞州布鲁克林。《艺伎回忆录》是其发表的第一部长篇小说。

From there she is taken to Gion, the pleasure district of Kyoto. She is nine years old. In the years that follow, as she works to pay back the price of her purchase, Sayuri will be schooled in music and dance, learn to apply the geisha's elaborate makeup, wear elaborate kimono, and care for a coiffure so fragile that it requires a special pillow. She will also acquire a magnanimous tutor and a venomous rival. Surviving the intrigues of her trade and the upheavals of war, the resourceful Sayuri is a romantic heroine on the order of Jane Eyre and Scarlett O'Hara. And Memoirs of a Geisha is a triumphant work - suspenseful, and utterly persuasive.
