阿瑟·高頓（Arthur Golden），生於美國田納西州查塔努加（Chattanooga），本科畢業於哈佛大學藝術史係，專攻日本藝術。1980年，獲哥倫比亞大學日本史碩士學位，兼修中文。在北京大學進修一個夏季之後，他到東京工作。迴到美國後他在波士頓大學獲英文碩士學位。目前他與妻子和兩個孩子定居馬薩諸塞州布魯剋林。《藝伎迴憶錄》是其發錶的第一部長篇小說。

She will also acquire a magnanimous tutor and a venomous rival. Surviving the intrigues of her trade and the upheavals of war, the resourceful Sayuri is a romantic heroine on the order of Jane Eyre and Scarlett O'Hara. 我不知道艺伎的“伎”字是什么意思，我只知道若写成“妓”没准被人笑话。。。 我说的是阿瑟·高顿的小说，我终于把它看完了。先看的电影，看的没头没脑，莫名其妙，以为美国的大导演胡乱窜改，后来才明白原来不是。只是这样的讲述一个特别名族的特别族群的故事，不用文字来...
