The compilation of the OED, begun in 1857, was one of the most ambitious projects ever undertaken. As definitions were collected, the overseeing committee, led by Professor James Murray, discovered that one man, Dr. W C. Minor, had submitted more than ten thousand. 作者简介
西蒙·温切斯特（Simon Winchester）
英国著名作家、记者。生于1944年，毕业于牛津大学地质系。曾任《卫报》及《星期日泰晤士报》海外特派员，并为《纽约时报》《国家地理杂志》及BBC等媒体撰稿，现居美国。
温切斯特长于描述历史事件，《教授与疯子》《喀拉喀托火山》《改变世界的地图》等小说多次登上《纽约时报》畅销书榜单。温切斯特凭借在新闻及文学领域的贡献，于2006年获大英帝国勋章。

Despite contents,the language is largely British and thus harsh to me,but above all it's surprisingly no-academic given that the book is intellectual.
