看書名還以為是本推理小說，但讀下去發現關於牛津詞典的兩個重要編纂者Murray和Minor的傳記。兩個人的人生都可謂傳奇。Murray14歲輟學，一路自學，卻成為瞭劍橋文化圈的核心人物。另一個是落魄貴族Minor，一個飽受精神疾病摺磨的天纔，錯殺一人，入獄後以誌願者方式參與牛津詞典的編纂。長達二十餘年間，Murray在minor的強力支持下完成瞭大部分編纂工作，並與其結成深厚友誼。然而他並不知Minor是一個在看守所住瞭二十多年的精神病患者，直到他不顧婉拒終於登門拜訪。故事以倒敘開篇，穿插講述瞭兩人的生平。如果是短篇故事，必然是滿分之作，但是作為長篇敘述，大篇幅的背景史料衝淡瞭故事本身，讀起來實在乏味。作者選取素材時似乎並無偏重，每一個背景都力求細節完整，導緻整本書零碎而讓人疲憊，實在可惜。

事件本身好評，敘事風格大差評。。結構混亂就算瞭，為毛隨隨便便就煽情。。。

英國著名作傢、記者。生於1944年，畢業於牛津大學地質係。曾任《衛報》及《星期日泰晤士報》海外特派員，並為《紐約時報》《國傢地理雜誌》及BBC等媒體撰稿，現居美國。

溫切斯特長於描述曆史事件，《教授與瘋子》《喀拉喀托火山》《改變世界的地圖》等小說多次登上《紐約時報》暢銷書榜單。溫切斯特憑藉在新聞及文學領域的貢獻，於2006年獲大英帝國勛章。
