基本直译，没有明显添减。和《怨女》的差别比起The Golden Cangue和《金锁记》的差别要大。英文的张爱玲失去了她中文里的神韵。

当年为借这本书哟，跑遍学校各个图书分馆，愣头青一样找到一个英文教授，原来书在他研究室里，他自己都不知道有这书。还记得在他门口询问，他很不好意思地问我rouge这个词是什么意思，我也是能扯，告诉他是秧歌，一种中国舞蹈????????????没脸见人了，后来查了字典发现是胭脂的意思????我当时误以为这本是秧歌，后来发现是怨女，其实就是长篇版金锁记。这是张用英文重写的，但看完后我挺失望的，小说力度被稀释了，还有她被吹上天的英文也并没有期望的那么动人。
