一九六三年齣生於西班牙，父母是加拿大人。幼時曾旅居哥斯達黎加、法國、墨西哥、加拿大，成年後作客伊朗、土耳其及印度。畢業於加拿大特倫特大學哲學係，其後從事過各種稀奇古怪的行業，包括植樹工、洗碗工、保安等。
