从Simonides开始追溯记忆术的系谱，主体处理中世纪后期两大传统的张力：强调图像/感官（sensibilis）、务实的classical rhetoric（pseudo Cicero，Quintilian）和强调灵智（intelligibilis）、heavenly microcosm的基督教神秘主义（Camilo, Lullism）；开创Christianized Cabalist art of memory的Bruno是融合两个传统的集大成者。虽然如此，本书出版早期却主要因为关于但丁和环球剧院的理论受到关注和争议。可对读Book of Memory (Carruthers), Economy of the Unlost (Carson), Iconology (Mitchell)。

英国知名历史学家，曾任教于伦敦大学华堡学院，并荣膺大英帝国司令勋章(Order of the British Empire)以及大英帝国二等女爵士(Dame Commander of the British Empire)等尊衔。另著有《布鲁诺与赫米斯知识传统》(Giordano Bruno and the Hermetic Tradition )(1964) 以及《玫瑰十字启蒙》(The Rosicrucian Enlightenment) (1971)等。
