This collection of new translations brings together the small proportion of Kafka's works that he thought worthy of publication. It includes 'Metamorphosis', his most famous work, an exploration of horrific transformation and alienation; 'Meditation', a collection of his earlier studies; 'The Judgement', written in a single night of frenzied creativity; 'The Stoker', the first chapter of a novel set in America and a fascinating occasional piece and 'The Aeroplanes at Brescia', Kafka's eyewitness account of an air display in 1909. Together, these stories reveal the breadth of Kafka's literary vision and the extraordinary imaginative depth of his thought.
評分譯者Michael Hofmann在前言中提到卡夫卡對於畫《變形記》插圖的建議:‘not, pace Nabokov, with an entomologically or coleopterically correct beetle, (…), but with a picture of a man lying in bed.’
Summary Schopenhauer and Dostoevsky are the two most likely spiritual mentors of this story. In his Parerga und Paralipomena, Schopenhauer suggested that it might be helpful to look at the world as a penal colony, and Dostoevsky, whom Kafka re-read in 1914...

Austere, economical, rich, humorous and sad. One simply cannot interpret Kafka's text in a Freudian style nor from a religious point of view (fucking distasteful and outrageously wrong). 2.
Havent bought the book yet, will do tomorrow. But after reading the whole piece of Metamorphosis, I couldnt erase this name for long, a haunted writer, indeed.
the ending is a bit lame though.
沒想到最愛的故事居然是In the Penal Colony,也非常喜歡The Judgement。
