Excellent economic history of the yangzi delta, although i'm not quiet convinced of Huang's analysis of post Mao economics. Still, best book I've read so far on the region.

在論證上，這本關於江南經濟的著作和前一本關於華北經濟的並無太大齣入，延續瞭作者在前一本中關於“沒有增長的發展”，“農業內圈化”的論點。但本書在比較江南農業經濟和華北平原上提供瞭很多有意思的點。華北平原的農民直接和政府接觸，而江南地區農民則通過鄉紳；華北地區災害的頻繁性使農民運動可得到更廣泛的支持，而江南地區相對的殷實使農民對太平天國等社會變動采取更加保守的態度。

黃宗智（Philip C.C.Huang），加利福尼亞大學洛杉磯校區（University of California，Los Angeles）曆史係教授（1966—2004年），中國研究中心創辦主任（1986～1995年），Modem China創刊編輯（1975年至今）。主要著作有《華北小農經濟與社會變遷》、《經驗與理論：中國社會、經濟與法律的實踐曆史研究》，以及法律史的三捲本：《清代的法律、社會與文化：民法的錶達與實踐》、《法典、習俗與司法實踐：清代與民國的比較》和《過去和現在：中國民事法律實踐的探索》。
