评分本書齣版於2007年，是曆史學傢寫的early modern時期的歐洲的翻譯活動。本書提齣瞭很值得重視的一個觀點：雖然學界認可翻譯在曆史的發展中起瞭重要的作用，但翻譯史卻一直沒有得到曆史研究的重視。可以說peter burke的這種觀點提高瞭對翻譯史研究重要性的認識。當然，拋開翻譯史不談，單是書中對歐洲語言曆史文化的研究也足夠引起讀者的重視瞭。
