列維斯•洛剋伍德，美國西方音樂史學傢，貝多芬研究專傢。1930年生於美國紐約，自幼熱愛音樂，學習大提琴演奏。1952年，師從愛德華•羅文斯基教授在紐約城市大學的皇後學院學習，後來又在普林斯頓大學先後攻讀藝術碩士和音樂學博士學位。1958年，成為普林斯頓大學教員，10年後升任教授。1980年，從普林斯頓大學轉到哈佛大學，繼續教學和研究工作，直到2002年退休。1982至1987年間，他曾擔任美國音樂學協會主席，目前是哈佛大學範尼•皮博蒂音樂研究教授。洛剋伍德的重要著述包括《文藝復興時期費拉拉宮廷的音樂》、《貝多芬：創作進程研究》、《貝多芬：音樂與人生》、《在貝多芬四重奏之內：曆史、錶演、詮釋》。

Written for the lay reader, this book explores the special problems that Beethoven faced as an artist who fulfilled his destiny as Mozart's sucessor while remaining a true, rebellious original. It uncovers the artistic challenges that Beethoven set for himself and shows how they were fulfilled in his compositions. In this way, Lockwood develops a new interpretation of the composer's character that puts to rest the "heroic" model as the only basis for understanding Beethoven's career. While taking the latest scholarship fully into account, Lockwood presents the reader with a portrait of the composer that is based principally on his artistic achievements.
