齣生在天主教傢庭的美國學者，在西寜進行1年的田野調查，探討中國的賽萊菲耶、颱布裏厄、皈信穆斯林、全球烏瑪，是前沿、現實、敏感的主題，欽佩作者的學術追求與眼光。 本書紕漏不少，首先作者關於中國伊斯蘭教的知識儲備不足：華寺門宦不屬於嘎得忍耶，是虎夫耶的支係；馬明心不是霍加阿法格的弟子；西寜人數最多的蘇菲派不是嘎得忍耶，而是虎夫耶。 其次作者的結論與批判缺乏客觀、以偏概全，武斷和誤讀源於他未對田野成果展開對話，未對訪談內容，尤其是存在異議的內容認真商榷。受訪人中缺乏精英和學者的觀點，因此十分片麵。人與田野是一個對話的過程，如果沒有對話和思辨，田野中的很多東西就被遮蔽。作者走的是人類學的路子，但是缺乏人類學的思維方式。
