Investigates the philosophical relationship between Levinas and Heidegger in a nonpolemical context, engaging some of philosophy’s most pressing issues.
Although both Levinas and Heidegger drew inspiration from Edmund Husserl’s phenomenological method and helped pave the way toward the post-structuralist movement of the late twentieth century, very little scholarly attention has been paid to the relation of these two thinkers. There are plenty of simple—and accurate—oppositions and juxtapositions: French and German, ethics and ontology, and so on. But there is also a critical intersection between Levinas and Heidegger on some of the most fundamental philosophical questions: What does it mean to be, to think, and to act in late modern life and culture? How do our conceptions of subjectivity, time, and history both reflect the condition of this historical moment and open up possibilities for critique, resistance, and transformation? The contributors to this volume take up these questions by engaging the ideas of Levinas and Heidegger relating to issues of power, violence, secularization, history, language, time, death, sacrifice, responsibility, memory, and the boundary between the human and humanism.
“The political background to the debate between Martin Heidegger and Emmanuel Levinas has often distorted the philosophical dispute … Fortunately, this volume approaches the debate with a clear view of the philosophical issue. It avoids polemically misconstruing Heidegger’s thought without making light of Levinas’s modification of it.” — Notre Dame Philosophical Reviews

Between Levinas and Heidegger, immediately sparks my intellectual curiosity. It promises a deep dive into the complex relationship between two titans of 20th-century philosophy. Heidegger, with his groundbreaking work on Dasein, authenticity, and the critique of metaphysics, offered a radical new way of understanding human existence and its embeddedness in the world. His concept of "care" and "anxiety" revealed the fundamental structure of our being-in-the-world. On the other hand, Levinas, deeply influenced by but also critical of Heidegger, shifted the philosophical focus dramatically towards ethics, emphasizing the encounter with the Other, the ethical imperative of the "face," and the primacy of responsibility. The very juxtaposition of their names suggests an exploration of profound philosophical tension, perhaps even a dialogue across their differing, yet often intersecting, concerns. I am particularly eager to see how the author navigates this terrain. Will it be through a comparative analysis of key concepts like time, language, or the body? Or perhaps by examining how Levinas's ethical turn can be understood as a response to or a radicalization of Heidegger's existentialism? The potential for new insights into subjectivity, alterity, and the very foundations of ethical thought is immense, and I anticipate a challenging yet rewarding intellectual journey.
The promise inherent in the title, Between Levinas and Heidegger, immediately caught my attention. It suggests a journey into the heart of some of the most significant philosophical debates of the 20th century, focusing on two thinkers whose work, while deeply influential, often seems to occupy distinct conceptual landscapes. Heidegger’s groundbreaking work on “Being and Time,” his meticulous analysis of “Dasein,” and his critique of traditional metaphysics opened up entirely new avenues for understanding human existence, our relationship to the world, and the very meaning of truth. His emphasis on “care,” “anxiety,” and the “call of conscience” remains profoundly impactful. In contrast, Levinas, while a direct interlocutor with Heidegger, famously pivoted towards a philosophy where ethics takes precedence over ontology. His focus on the “face of the Other,” the absolute ethical demand it imposes, and the concept of responsibility as the very foundation of subjectivity, offers a powerful alternative and often critical perspective. I am eager to see how this book navigates the complex terrain between these two intellectual giants. Will it explore the ways in which Levinas’s ethical system can be seen as a response to, or a radicalization of, Heidegger’s existential analytics? Or will it perhaps highlight the productive tensions and dialogues that emerge from their contrasting approaches to language, time, and the constitution of the self?
评分This book's title, Between Levinas and Heidegger, is incredibly evocative and promises a deep intellectual engagement. Heidegger's existential analytics, particularly his concept of "Dasein" and its fundamental structures like "care" and "temporality," revolutionized our understanding of human existence and its inherent finitude. His critique of Western metaphysics and his attempt to recover a more authentic relationship with Being have had a profound and lasting impact on philosophical thought. On the other hand, Levinas, deeply influenced by Heidegger yet offering a radical ethical revision, shifts the philosophical center of gravity to the encounter with the "Other." His concept of the "face" as a site of absolute ethical command and his emphasis on responsibility as the very essence of subjectivity present a compelling counterpoint. I am particularly intrigued by how this book will bridge the gap between these two distinct philosophical projects. Does it explore how Levinas's ethical framework might reinterpret Heidegger's ontological insights? Or perhaps how Heidegger's understanding of temporality could inform Levinas's notion of ethical commitment? The potential for uncovering new understandings of subjectivity, alterity, and the foundations of ethical thought is immense, and I look forward to a rigorous exploration of these complex ideas.
评分The very title, Between Levinas and Heidegger, immediately conjures a sense of intellectual inquiry into a fascinating philosophical nexus. Heidegger’s exploration of “being” and “Dasein,” his meticulous dissection of our fundamental existence within the world, has undeniably reshaped continental philosophy. His concepts of “care,” “anxiety,” and the “call of conscience” offer profound insights into the human condition. However, it is Levinas’s radical ethical turn, his emphasis on the irreducibility of the Other and the absolute imperative of responsibility that arises from the encounter with the “face,” that presents such a compelling contrast and potential dialogue with Heidegger. The question that immediately arises for me is: how does this book navigate the apparent chasm between Heidegger’s ontology and Levinas’s ethics? Does it seek to reconcile their seemingly disparate approaches, perhaps by reinterpreting key concepts through the lens of the other? Or does it instead illuminate the productive tensions between them, revealing how each philosopher’s work can both challenge and enrich the other? I’m particularly interested in how the book might engage with their differing views on language, time, and the nature of the self in relation to the world and to others. This promises to be a deep and thought-provoking exploration.
评分Having some familiarity with both Levinas and Heidegger, I'm drawn to this book by the promise of a nuanced exploration of their intertwined yet distinct philosophical projects. Heidegger's seminal work on "being-in-the-world" and his analysis of "Dasein" laid bare the fundamental structures of human existence, emphasizing our inherent situatedness and our temporal nature. His critique of Western metaphysics and his call for a new understanding of "truth" as "aletheia" continue to resonate deeply. Levinas, while deeply engaged with Heideggerian thought, famously pivoted towards an ethics that he considered prior to ontology. His concept of the "face of the Other" as a site of infinite ethical demand, and his emphasis on responsibility as the very essence of subjectivity, offer a powerful counterpoint to Heidegger's focus on the solitary Dasein. I am intrigued by the potential ways in which this book might bridge these two perspectives. Does it explore how Levinas's ethical framework might reframe Heidegger's ontology? Or perhaps how Heidegger's understanding of temporality could inform Levinas's notion of ethical commitment? The very title suggests a careful mapping of their conceptual landscapes, highlighting both their points of convergence and their irreducible differences. I expect a rigorous examination that respects the complexity of each philosopher's thought.
评分From the moment I saw the title, Between Levinas and Heidegger, I knew I had to pick it up. The very idea of exploring the philosophical space between these two monumental thinkers is, in itself, a testament to the dynamic nature of philosophical inquiry. Heidegger, with his monumental project of uncovering the meaning of Being through the analysis of Dasein, offered a profound reimagining of our place in the world, emphasizing our thrownness, our temporality, and our inherent situatedness. His critique of Western thought and his attempt to recall us to a more primordial understanding of existence have had an immeasurable impact. Yet, Levinas, deeply shaped by and ultimately diverging from Heidegger, shifts the ground entirely, asserting the primacy of ethics and the irreducible otherness of the Neighbor. His concept of the "face" as a site of ethical command, and the inherent responsibility that arises from this encounter, presents a compelling challenge to purely ontological concerns. I am particularly eager to discover how this book bridges these seemingly vast conceptual territories. Does it explore how Levinas’s ethical framework recontextualizes Heidegger’s existentialism? Or perhaps how Heidegger’s understanding of temporality can illuminate Levinas’s ethical commitments? The possibilities for uncovering new layers of meaning and understanding are truly exciting.
