马克·吕布第一次（1957年）和第二次（1965年）两次在中国拍摄成果的集结成册。三面旗帜指的是“人民公社、大跃进、总路线”——这也分别是书中三个章节的标题——标题政治意味十足，然而马克拍摄的都是细节，以及处于纯真与狂热之间的一张张脸。这两次（每次四个月）旅行，马克走遍了中国东部和南部大部分地区的主要城市。书中彩色照片几占一半，排版是杂志式的图文结合，文字也为马克撰写。
