在书店一下就被这些清冷阴暗不详诡异但是凄美得不行的插画给迷住了。20世纪初的插画能看出来很强的受art nouveau和art deco的影响，密集的符号式的装饰元素被大量使用；画面几乎没有透视，于是有种中世纪风格充满禁忌色彩的诡异；里面的人物纤瘦没什么感情只有画面整体传达出的哀愁；然后也受日本木刻版画影响，不对称和留白的构图有种非常含蓄的东方意蕴。前面附带的简介虽然有点多，但是了解一下彩色插画印刷的兴起和发展，还有这些北欧民间传说是怎么收集来的和一些对插画家的介绍点评还是挺好的。这些民间故事本身比较简单粗暴，连寓言都算不上的宗教儿童文学的水平。人物和情节扁平得几乎都指向同一个事——一念之差触犯禁忌，需要用巨大的努力去弥补或赎罪，然而自我救赎不过就是依照先知的指示完成任务落入另一个宿命

First published in 1914, East of the Sun and West of the Moon is a celebrated collection of fifteen fairy tales, gathered by legendary Norwegian folklorists Peter Christen Asbjørnsen and Jørgen Engebretsen Moe on their journeys across Norway in the mid-nineteenth century. Nielsen’s illustration edition of Asbjørnsen and Moe’s tales is considered a jewel of early 20th-century children's literature, highly sought-after by art and book collectors worldwide. An original signed copy of the book sold at auction in 2008 commanded the highest price ever paid for an illustrated children’s book.

This finely crafted reprint restores the stunning detail and artistry of Nielsen’s images to their original splendor.
