歐文講瞭一個長長的故事，有人會問他你這些故事的意義何在，想說明什麼？（正如這個故事的後記所寫）但歐文反對的就是一味追求道德意義，他講故事為瞭娛樂讀者，為瞭讀者在小說的某個片段會心一笑，一笑而過就好。人生也有涯，不做無意義之事，又何以遣有涯之生？
