歐文講瞭一個長長的故事，有人會問他你這些故事的意義何在，想說明什麼？（正如這個故事的後記所寫）但歐文反對的就是一味追求道德意義，他講故事為瞭娛樂讀者，為瞭讀者在小說的某個片段會心一笑，一笑而過就好。人生也有涯，不做無意義之事，又何以遣有涯之生？

讀完突然感覺鞦天來瞭。Irving筆下的新美國人不堪勢利而弱小，同時也精明勤勞，Brom Bones是歐洲Cavalry的時間，Yankee Ichabod 則是新大陸的機械時間(無頭騎士把腦袋扔齣去砸Ichabod那裏太好笑瞭吧。
