米爾頓•邁耶（Milton Mayer, 1908—1986）

德裔美國猶太人，記者、教育傢、雜誌專欄作傢。因其卓有見識卻備受爭議的文章而獲喬治•波爾剋國際報道奬和本傑明•富蘭剋林新聞奬。除本書外，另著有《獸類的本性》（The Nature of the Beast），《不可能的藝術：對捷剋反抗的研究》（The Art of the Impossible: a Study of the Czech Resistance），《一個人能做什麼?》（What Can a Man Do?）等，以及閤著《教育中的革命》（The Revolution in Education）。

邁耶齣生於芝加哥，在猶太教改革派影響下長大。高中畢業於恩格爾伍德中學，受過以拉丁語等古典語言為主的古典教育。1925—1928年，於芝加哥大學學習，但未獲得學位。1928—1929年，在美聯社、《芝加哥晚郵報》和《芝加哥晚間美國人報》擔任記者。曾任教於芝加哥大學、馬薩諸塞州立大學、路易斯維爾大學以及美國之外的一些大學，並擔任民主機構研究中心的顧問。1955年，邁耶齣版瞭最具影響力的著作：《他們以為他們是自由的》。在德國為本書做調查期間，他成為貴格派教徒，其後又作為反戰人士聞名於世。1986年，邁耶逝世於加利福尼亞的卡梅爾小鎮。
