和專業運動員相比，Dean Karnazes除瞭跑步，還有一份在某個軟件公司朝五晚九的工作，幾乎完美的傢庭，和各種其他戶外運動愛好，聽起來有點不可思議，他說這本書也是在跑步時用錄音筆寫的。看到一半的時候，稍微有點兒後悔今天晚上沒去跑步，這本書的主要情節是四次超長跑運動，其中第一段，一百英裏的Western States尤為感人，對超長跑中身體與意誌搏鬥的過程，暫時失明，幻覺，嘔吐，疼痛，種種細節描寫，也著實生動，讀到他離終點兩英裏的時候實在跑不動隻好往前爬的時候，我自己的腿似乎也難以動彈瞭。
