Learn the methods used by Yeats , February 4, 2008
By N. Gallo (western Massachusetts)
Helen Vendler's analysis of Yeats' poetry is thorough and mind-boggling in detail. She deals with his early work by comparing it to its sources. She considers it fairly thought-free. His later work becomes more complex, very disciplined and captures the flavor of the times. The Irish war for independence influences the work as does World War I. Yeats' relationships with friends and family is discussed as it affects his writing. An absolutely marvelous book.
