"Peu à peu,j’ai compris que dans mon travail de photographe je ne traitais en fait que d’un thème unique, celui de la survie des habitants d’une ville sans avenir... Sur un plan personnel, subjectif, je refusais d’accepter qu’on puisse jamais faire de Beyrouth, la ville où nous avions vécu et connu tant de plaisirs, un nom simplement synonyme de mort".

Fouad Elkoury est Libanais. Après des études d’architecture à Londres, il retourne à Beyrouth où il devient photographe de presse. Il travaille ensuite pour Libération, puis pour les agences Rush, Sygma et Cosmos. Le texte qui accompagne ces photos, écrit en collaboration avec Brigitte Legars, raconte son évolution personnelle, ses années de formation entre Paris et Beyrouth, et son expérience singulière de photographe de presse directement affecté par une guerre qu’il est chargé de photographier.
