路上读书解读：由一个灵异现象，也就是主人公司各特莫名其妙消失的体重，来贯穿整部小说。不过这并不是一个单纯的悬疑惊悚故事。斯蒂芬·金的代表作，比如说已经被搬上大银幕的《闪灵》和《小丑回魂》，都具有令人毛骨悚然的情节和细节。《上升》这本书则一反常态，几乎没有什么恐怖色彩，反而有种温暖的基调。主人公是一个人生失意，并且正在经历灵异事件的中年白人男子，生活在一个观念传统的小镇，但是因为意外获得的“超能力”帮助了遭受歧视的同性恋邻居，和她们结成了同盟。本书讨论同性恋平权问题。作者女儿就是同性恋。正如小说中写的，同性恋以及已婚同性伴侣仍需面对各种顽固的偏见和歧视。在小说的结尾，城堡岩人最后接纳了迪尔德丽和唐纳森，司各特也终于得到了一种上升的轻盈，暗示着光明、和解与希望。
