Charles Péguy (January 7, 1873-September 5, 1914) was a noted French poet, essayist and editor. His two main inspirations were socialism and nationalism, but by 1908 at the latest, he had become a devout but non-practicing Roman Catholic From then on, Catholicism had a major influence on his works.
Peguy's reputation rests mainly on his poetry, and little of his work is available in English. This translation of an adaptation prepared for the Comedie Francaise in 1983 is therefore something of a literary event. The adaptation, based on the second of two plays about Saint Joan (completed in 1910), focuses on her personal struggle to come to terms with evil and her despair regarding the coming of God's kingdom. Though much abridged, it retains the austerity and insightfulness of the original. This deeply religious drama may not have broad appeal, but public and academic libraries will find that it complements other, better known, plays about Saint Joan, and church libraries will be especially interested.
