李木兰的批评方法是不错的，跳脱出了那种把红楼梦作为反应的性别平等、女性意识的文本预设，扩大了红楼梦性别批评的范围以及多元性。但是她自己对红楼梦文本的解读很多时候难以让人信服。总结下来就是，强在方法论和对于批评的批评，弱在对于文本的批评。

Edwards reads The Story of the Stone mainly from the perspective of gender, somehow it feels a bit strained (eg. blaming Jiamu for overindulging Baoyu and its ensuing grave outcome of the downfall of the whole clan). I didn't linger on her interpretation.

As a feminist, I actually enjoyed parts of the book, although at times I find the framework very limiting and forcefully imposed. But my professor whom I admire thinks this book is utter bullshit and one should never write about HLM like this.

Regarding discussions on gender issues in HLM, Edwards's book is better than nothing but her(perhaps a her) methodologies are confined by her time and her limited knowledge of Chinese gender problems in Qing dynasty.
