Richard M. Barnhart is John M. Schiff Professor Emeritus of Art History at Yale University.

王方宇（1913~1997），生於北京，1936 年畢業於北京輔仁大學教育係。 1944 年負笈美國， 1946 年美國哥倫比亞大學碩士畢業。因八大山人作品收藏傢和研究者聞名於世。

王方宇教授最富盛名的是作為特立獨行的佛門畫傢八大山人的研究權威。八大是明皇室遺胄，與王方宇相似，在他很小的年歲就顯示齣過人的智性。1644年明朝滅亡，八大的生活進入一個混亂的狀態，自此到他後來齣山的近五十年時間中，他創造瞭大量書畫作品，今天有他數量眾多的作品存世。

王方宇在八大山人的生活和藝術方麵有創造性的研究，有多種研究成果齣版，最後齣版的是有關八大深度研究的重要著作《荷園主人》。王教授也是一位收藏傢。所有收藏傢都會受到時間、財力以及專門知識的限製。盡管作為一位大學教授囊羞澀，王教授還是將他的菲薄收入投到八大山人作品的收集上，建立瞭世界上最大的八大山人作品的私人收藏，一些收藏現存於華盛頓史密森尼爾博物院下屬的佛利爾美術館。
