From School Library Journal PreSchool-Grade 3. These eye-catching but flawed board books are vividly illustrated with full-color, labeled photographs of everyday objects related to a particular theme. Clothes and Garden picture easily recognizable items; Food has objects that will be a little more difficult to identify, e.g., rice (with peas and shrimp mixed with it) and a baked potato (stuffed with what appears to be a mixture of green onions, corn, and chicken). These titles have no logical organization or grouping other than their broad topic. Garden, for example, features carrots, a squirrel, a butterfly, gardening gloves, and a bucket on one spread. Part of language development is learning to make associations, and these books fail to help children do that. Effective concept books are needed for toddlers and older ESL and special education students, but these selections miss the mark.?Vicki Emery, Belle View Elementary School, Alexandria, VACopyright 1997 Reed Business Information, Inc. Book Description First Words books are filled with photos of every child's world. Large, colorful pictures and simple text encourage reading and make learning fun.
