These essays, reviews, and columns are largely concerned with the strug-
gles and fascinations surrounding racism, sexism, and sexual orientation.
The period given the most attention was kicked off by the Civil Rights
Movement, which was as important to the direction and the evolving na-
ture of this society as the fall of colonialism was to sovereign representa-
tion in the United Nations. The Civil Rights Movement was quite influen-
tial in raising the issues and setting the tone for much of the redefinition
that has taken place in America over the last thirty years or so, redefini-
tion that the country has been moving toward in one way or another from
the moment explorers or chattels or immigrants began arriving on this
continent. These changes of perspective touch me as a writer because I
am primarily interested in those affirmations of human value that have
brought about reconsiderations of history, the arts, and heavy-handed, de-
meaning, or soppy media images.
This rush of new definitions, of revisions, of repudiated stereotypes is
part of what has led me to think of our century as The Age of Redefini-
tion. We have either inherited or participated in, observed or been stupe-
fied by, the monumental shifts of meaning engendered by work in the
worlds of scientific research, technology, warfare, and social movements.
Our international inheritance is one of inspiration, threat, and disappoint-
ment. We know an unprecedented number of things about our brains and
our bodies, about the natural world of this hurtling sphere, and about the
