THE PURPOSE of a course in production/operations management is to pro-

vide you with an insight into how production is brought about. And that is

the purpose of this book. It has been designed to portray the conditions

under which production takes place and the part managers and workers

play in effecting production.

The book will also call your attention to many of the problems faced by

managers and to the merits of the different courses of action that are open

to them. Emphasis is put on managers as decision makers who continually

face alternatives, each having certain advantages, yet at the same time

having disadvantages.

This book supplies descriptive material to provide you with the back-

ground necessary for understanding the concepts and appreciating the

managerial problems presented. Quantitative materials and problems are

introduced frequently. These follow the trend in the last several years

toward quantifying more and more of the areas of decision making in

production and operations management. These problems are confined to

small ones of the kind that can be presented and solved in the text. Diffi-

cult mathematical calculations have been avoided.

There may be times when you will wish for a definite answer and

recommendation in some matter, and find none in the text. This may not

be fully satisfying, yet this is how it often is in the real world. If you fly,

you generally arrive at your destination quickly, but you don t See the

countryside. If you drive on the superhighway, you go more slowly and see

more. And if you go on the back roads, you go still more slowly and

see much more. Which is best? The answer depends on what you want.

The text frequently points out the good and bad things about alternative

actions without categorically choosing one as best.
