ACNE<br >Until one or two years ago， many dermatologists were dosing ache<br >patients with antibiotics， sometimes for periods of years. With equal<br >conviction， they now assert that hormonal imbalance is responsible<br >for this skin disease， justifying glandular therapy. Although they find<br >it currently fashionable to deny that diet plays any part in acne， I<br >remember a statement made by a physician， a diplomate in der-<br >mat01ogy， who for years was my ~sociate in research in nutrition.<br >"A rise in blood glucose [sugar]，" he~ said， "is multiplied by five when<br >it reaches the skin." His point: Sugar saturated skin is a happy hunt-<br >ing ground for bacteria. Diabetics will have learned to agree. That<br >takes us back to the acne diet of decades ago: It is important to<br >reduce the intake of sugar. Unfortunately， sealing the sugar bowl<br >doesn t accomplish that， for much of our sugar intake is concealed<br >in foods. Ketchup contains 20 percent sugar， Shake n Bake is 50<br >percent sugar， canned green peas are sugared， a doughnut contains<br >five teaspoonfuls and a portion of apple pie twelve teaspoonfuls;<br >there is even sugar in the antacid tablet you take for the indigestion<br >fanned by too much sugar.<br > Several nutrients have proved beneficial in acne. These include<br >vitamin A， 5，000 to 10，000 units daily; high-potency vitamin B com-<br >plex; vitamin 130， 10 mg. daily; lecithin， one to two tablespoons of<br >granules daily; and zinc gluconate or a chelated form， 15 to 30 mg.<br >daily. The physician may considerably increase these levels.<br >When allergies have been clearly identified and your biochemistry<br >cooperates enough not to develop new allergies and lose old ones<br >ALLERG!ES<br ><br >
