Louisa May Alcott has received a great deal of critical attention m recent
years for a number of different reasons: the discovery and publication of her
"thrillers," the gothic short stories which are unlike any of the works she
ever wrote for children; a renewed interest in her adult works in general,
especially her novels Moods and Work; a new interest in children s literature
by critics of adult literature; and feminist critics reexamination of wom-
en s works frequently not included in the canon of traditional literature.
That Alcott should be the focus of so much attention is a tribute to her
versatility as a writer and to the enduring quality of her works.
