Designer Bernhard Willhelm graduated from the fashion department of the Antwerp Academy in 1998. His work is characterised by fantastic, grotesque imagery in which an apparently innocent, even childlike fantasy is subtly subverted. But his fashion is never anti-fashion. On the fringes of the major fashion houses, he works at building his own universe, always with a slightly ironic touch, breaking down taboos and subverting fashionable ways of dressing. In his own inimitable way he combines the banal, the grotesque and the everyday with the world of high fashion. Willhelm and Jutta Kraus invited the Swiss artists Taiyo Onorato and Nico Krebs to provide the graphic design and scenography for the exhibition this catalogue was produced to accompany: Het Totaal Rappel.
