Treasury was published in/983, Anne Tyler,
writing in The Washington Post Book World,
hailed it as "a bountiful plum pudding of a
book. ! can imagine reading it aloud to an
audience of all ages." This revised and expanded
edition is even plummier, with appropriate
contributions for the season by some of the
most glittering practitioners of the English
language.
Among the new authors in this volume
is p. D. James, whose absorbing mystery story,
"The Murder of Santa Claus," has never
been published in a book or magazine. There
is also Cleveland Amory, with "The Rescue;
from The Cat Who Came for Christmas;
M. E K. Fisher s "Home for Christmas";
Shirley Jackson s "A Visit to the Bank"; Peter
Matthiessen s "The Cloud Forest"; Noel
Mostert s "A Christmas Dinner"; and Jack
Newcombe s "A Christmas Train."
Along with these additions to A New
Christmas Treasury are best-remembered
holiday works by such literary lights as Willa
Cather, John Cheerer, Robert Frost, James
Joyce, John Keats, Ring Lardner, Herman
Melville, Eleanor Roosevelt, Henry David
Thoreau, Laura Ingalls Wilder--in all,
eighty-seven memorable stories, poems, and
essays that lovingly celebrate the season,but
that also can be read and reread at any time of
the year.
