這本書緊接著Raz的The Morality of Freedom之後齣版，對autonomy的概念做瞭相當有價值的討論，並進而引申到醫學倫理、傢長主義等具體實踐話題。對於我個人的最大啓發在於，學到瞭如何去更好地界定一個概念，如何取捨概念的厚與薄或者強與弱，特彆是處理一些規範性概念的時候。這一點在Hart的The Concept of Law中有點皮毛的體會，到Gerald Dworkin這裏又加深瞭一些。所以，這本書的前三章值得反復閱讀。
