Born in the 1950s in Madagascar, John Fung moved to Macau with his family at the age of 13. A few years later, he moved to Hong Kong where he has worked in various different disciplines in odd jobs, such as starring in a film, working at construction sites, opening restaurants and making lamps, but all along, he has never put down his camera. Over the past decade, he has photographed for several magazines and for non-profit organizations.
Hong Kong Is often cited as the city with the most high-rises and the highest population density. Yet, even more skyscrapers are being built, and reclamation is making room for even more mega-structures, while the harbour is narrowing. There are whole buildings with low or zero occupancy, but property values continue to escalate, and housing remains a burden for may people. How high can the price of a square foot of property go? John Fung's multi-exposure images in One Square Foot disarm, intrigue, and triumph. Taken at high speed and unmanipulated, the photographs are open and complex, and the geometry full of relationships that seem to carry humanity, even if the images are people-less.
