Demands for improved standards in higher education has lead to the creation of the Institute of Learning and Teaching in Higher Education (ILTHE). This professional text should assist members of university staff to achieve associate membership of the ILTHE and provide evidence for promotion. The book addresses the basic generic issues, as recommended by the ILTHE, these include: planning and preparation; conducting teaching and learning sessions; assessment and evaluation; reviewing and improving teaching; academic administration, management and leadership; and continual professional development. The ILTHE expects academics to have knowledge of: their subject material; how their subject is taught and learned; teaching approaches; the use of learning technologies; techniques for monitoring and evaluating their own teaching; the mission of their institute and how it affects teaching and learning strategies; and regulations, policies and practices affecting their work. The final part of this book illustrates how the practitioner can gather evidence to demonstrate this knowledge, areas of expertise and development of teaching skills and how they can produce a portfolio of development.
