应该是很能代表周蕾理论功力的一本书。其实运用资源并不复杂，后殖民、精神分析、福柯、马克思主义这些最常见的东西而已，我也并不认为这本书中有多少“原创”理论，但周蕾串联理论，细致分梳，拆解文本的功力太足了。二三四章里，stereotype，mimicry，abject这些经典的概念被她在后殖民语境中玩得更活更复杂了，从各个方位论证ethnicity是一个（西方中心）现代性／资本主义总体部署中的核心支点，它并不只代表歧视和压迫，更是维持着一种不平等的政治话语和实践不断生产／交换系统的发生性因素（这里显然借鉴了福柯讨论性和生命政治）。

导论从福柯“人的显现”开始，引入生命政治与种族大屠杀，继而将种族差异性与生命权力并置，认为人生而平等但却有人更平等。总论章节标题致敬韦伯，最巧妙之处在于借用卢卡奇阶级意识模型，将其解读为关于拘役和抗争的叙事，其对于人性逃离被“物化”的观点则被用来佐证终结剥削的可能性，最终和韦伯的资本主义精神汇流，认为对峙和反抗是资本主义本身的结构，也是其兴盛之因。将种族问题扩大到资本主义结构性问题，不管是否确切，整个过程确是酣畅淋漓，功力尽显。分述中，运用刻板印象、贱斥、摹仿、女性化等概念，剖析跨种族交流中的自我呈述和被呈述。理论运用和建构过于复杂，或是为了搅乱所有现行认知和预设。在资本主义精神下，对于新教式种族的召唤不断在各处生成，我们需要打破种族性自我哀怨的情绪结构，终结其久在的被歧视逻辑。
