Adichie虽着重描写尼日利亚的小人物，但从语言风格来说已经非常美国化了。作者很擅长捕捉文化差异带来的冲突，'A Private Experience,'天主教女医生和穆斯林妇女为躲避暴乱共处一室，产生的火花就异常动人；"The Shivering"里面的同性恋者角色也很出彩。但有的故事显得用力过猛，比如"The Arrangers of Marriage"讲移民的身份危机和文化认同露出了说教意味。这本短篇小说集甚至可以看做为《Americanah》做素材积累，“Imitation”中终年辗转于美国和尼日利亚的艺术收藏家丈夫Obiora就跟Obinze有很多性格和处境类似；On Monday of Last Week"里的硕士移民Kamara在美国当保姆的经历也跟Ifemelu有共同之处。

I would recommend “The Thing Around Your Neck” in this short-story collection. If you like the idea of “the exotic”, this story will show, once again, that “the exotic” exists nowhere else but in your own mind, and as always, says everything about you...
