A reprint from 1968, this book presents a study of addiction to opiates and their synthetic equivalents. It is a revision of the author's 1947 book Opiate Addiction, incorporating new evidence and arguments. The late Lindesmith, who taught sociology at Indiana U., presents a theory behind the addict's craving for drugs based on observations and conversations with about 50 addicts from Chicago. He argues that addiction is based on the alleviation of withdrawal distress. He also addresses relapse, the effects of opiates, public policy in the US since the nineteenth century, and possible reforms.
