第一次看日本人拿英文写的小说。读完我还是不明白为什么一个在外人看来极其无聊的职业和主人公半辈子毫无大起大落的年月竟然能被写得这么耐人寻味。语言非常优雅，叙事上很有日本人的克制（或是一个管家职业性的克制？），常常是点到为止，知道重要的事就在幕后却不将幕帷拉开。很妙。
